He began by creating an external fixiation frame that was placed around the leg. "Knowing the compression of the fracture would help stimulate bone healing, he built a frame that has this capacity," says Dr. Iredale. Many years ago a long-time smoker, Dr. John Iredale of Central Carolina Foot & Ankle knows first-hand the difficulties of letting go of the habit and the tremendous health benefits that result from doing so. When Dr. John Iredale talks about the biomechanics of the foot—how its many parts relate to one another during walking and movement—experts in this country and abroad listen attentively. He is an acknowledged master in this field, and, since his graduation from podiatry school in 1967, a prodigy and disciple of Dr. Merton Root, who is often referred to as the intellectual parent of podiatric biomechanics. A painful journey ended for 11-year-old Ryan when his mother brought him to Dr. John Iredale at Central Carolina Foot & Ankle in Durham. For most boys his age, walking, running, and playing hard are as natural as breathing, but that was not true for Ryan. When he walked, his feet hurt. When he jogged or tried to run with some speed, the pain was almost unbearable—and so he stopped making the effort. |
